Discovering Myself

The Essential Items for a Living Room

by me on Jun.22, 2008, under Uncategorized

Let’s start with the Living room first.  We want online the items in the Living room that we absolutely need to make the atmosphere seem cozy and hospitable for guests.

1. Sofa/Couch or other comfortable and clean seating.  I can’t emphasize enough how important it is for the seating to be clean.  Noone feels comfortable sitting in filth.

2. Coffee table or other item to set drinks on while sitting around on the seating and socializing.  This is a must.  I can’t tell you how awkward it is to sit around with nowhere to put your drink.

3. Lighting.  This one is to taste, but the lighting should be bright enough to comfortably read, but not so bright as to make people squint or see off a shiny forehead!

4. Television, this one is not essential to everyone, but it’s essential to me since I only have one living space and it must house my television to watch movies and do other entertaining with.  I sometimes put photos on it, etc.

5. Storage for movies, etc.  This is essential, you want to hide all of the knick knacky stuff so that it doesn’t draw attention away from what is important, i.e. your guests!

6. Wall handings should be profound, but not distracting.  Again, you want something to make the room feel comfortable, but not to take attention away from your guests.  This is also different for every style of living room.  Huge color transitions might be distracting in one home, but not in another.

7. Clock, you want to always have the time displayed somewhere in the living area so that your guests don’t have to take out their phones or look at their watches.  I think this one is important, but others might not.  I figure I’m not running a casino, so I don’t mind if my guests know what time it is.

Finally, everythin else must go.  Just move it to the bedroom which we will tackle later.  As our last stop, that will be the area where we actually pair down to our bare essentials.

A not of impotance for everyone.  Since I am a tech geek, all my technology will probably take more precedence, but I do like to hide things when I can.  This means that I like my tech to be readily available to me, but to not be seen or heard by guests.  This isn’t so much possible right now since my living space is quite small, but when I buy a home, it’s ON!
